Cishou Pagoda

    Also named Jinshan Pagoda, it is initially built in Qiliang period of Nan Dynasty and covers a history of more than 1,400 years. The pagoda is with height of 30 meters. In Tang and Song Dynasty, there were double pagodas and it was named “JianCi Pagoda”, “Jian Shou Pagoda” in Song Dynasty. In 1472, Sesshu Toyo, the famous Japanese painter, loaded and visited Jinshan and painted the Map of Longyou Temple (nowadays Jinshan Temple) in the Yangtze River Heart in Tang Dynasty, where in the picture there were double pagodas in the opposite directions of South and North. The double pagodas were damaged in fire and one Pagoda was re-built in Ming dynasty and was named Cishou Pagoda. According to Buddhism habit of different countries, when a temple is built then a pagoda should also be built, especially for famous temples and mountains, there must be pagodas. This re-built pagoda was damaged again in Qing Dynasty and in the 20th year of Guangxu period of Qing Dynasty, Yinru, the abbot of Jinshan Temple at that time, made up his mind to re-build the pagoda and he appealed to the imperial court and the Empress Cixi ordered him to build on his own money-collecting. He traveled many places and tried to mendicant one by one and finally he got supporting from Liu Kunyi, the governor of ancient Jiangsu and Anhui, and with five year’s efforts, he collected finally silvers of 29,600 liang (unit of weight, one liang is equal to 50g) and built the nowadays pagoda with name of Cishou Pagoda. The pagoda is smart, beautiful, tall and straight and stands on the top of Jinshan Mountain and perfectly matches the Jinshan Temple, it seems even elevate the height of Jinshan Mountain. The pagoda is made of wood with seven floors and eight sides and is equipped with spiral stairs for travelers to look into far distance. Doors are equipped in four sides of each floor and their corridors are connected. Each side has its own scenery and Travelers can walk to the top of the pagoda and once look into the distance he can see that: in the east direction there are Jiaoshan Mountain of the Yangtze River and the dangerous and solid Beigushan Mountain; in the south direction, the whole city scenery appears in eyesight as well as the mountains and peaks in layer after layer; in the west direction, there are glistening pools and powerful Yangtze River streams; and in the north direction, the ancient town Guazhou and the ancient city Yangzhou will make him relaxed and happy.
